Hello,

I tried to install this promising tool today but I found one problem.
The Dicom Network sniffer application does not want to start because it does not see the winPcap component (see attached file). It is automatically installed during the overall install process and it is succesfull !! I checked with winDump as well and it is OK.

Perhaps I missed something ?
Thanks for helping me

Regards

Hi,

I receive the same error message when I start Network Sniffer. Did you solve the problem?

I am having this same problem when installing on Windows 2003 Server. I do not have the problem when installing on the same hardware with Windows 2000.

Is there some issue with .NET 2/1.1?

Hi everybody.

Note that the install process stops whenever it finds a earlier version of WinPcap installed (eg 4.0), this because the winpcap installer contained in the dvtk setup itself stops.

You can try the following:

Do a search of your system for the following two files
packet.* and wpcap.dll
You should find them located in the System32 directory.

Rename or delete the files and then reinstall the Network Sniffer.

I just had a similar problem.
My Solution was to remove my existing winpcap v4.0 via Add/Remove Programs, and download and install the legacy WinPcap version 3.01.
http://www.winpcap.org/archive/3.1-WinPcap.exe

Apparently "DICOM Network Analyzer" v2.8.14 is not compatible with winpcap v4 or above, nor with 64 bit systems, nor apparently VISTA operating system.

- I already had WireShark(formerly Ethereal) installed. Wireshark asks before replacing Winpcap v3.x with version 4.0. (Latest version of Winpcap is now v4.01.) Wireshark v0.99.5 still works ok on my WinXP 32bit laptop, now running WinPcap v3.1. (I did not need the additional functions supported by WinPcap v4.x)
- I already had .net v1.1 installed.
- running WinXP-sp2 on Dell D610 Laptop (32bit?)

When I installed "DICOM Network Sniffer and Analyzer" it popped up an error message stating:
WinPcap 3.1 Setup: "A newer version of WinPcap (internal version 4.0.0.755) is already installed on this machine. The installation will be aborted." I clicked OK.

The "Dicom Network Analyzer" itself had installed, so I clicked it's icon to run it. It simply popped up a message stating:
"Warning: There is no network adapter(driver) detected on the machine. Please install WinPcap 3.0 or above from the application installation directory." I click ok, and the app closed.

Removing the newer WinPcap v4.x and installing the older WinPcap v3.1 resolved the issue.

NOTE: This indicates the need for this program to be upgraded if it's going to continue to be useful.
NOTE: "The User Manual - DICOM Network Sniffer and Analyzer 2.8.14", section "1.3.2 Software requirements" on page 4 states: "WinPCap 3.0 or above".

The following WinPcap compability info is from http://www.winpcap.org
"Starting from WinPcap 4.0beta3, support for the Windows 9x/ME family of operating systems has been dropped. The last builds supporting such OSes are WinPcap 3.1 and WinPcap 4.0beta2, both available in the archive.
Windows 95,98, ME: Support for Windows 95/98/ME has been dropped starting from WinPcap 4.0 beta3. The source packages still include the code base for those operating systems, but the setup executable will refuse to install. The last versions supporting such operating systems are WinPcap 3.1 (stable) and WinPcap 4.0 beta2 (unstable), however they are no longer supported by the WinPcap team, so if you encounter any problem you are on your own.
Windows XP/2003: WinPcap 2.3 or newer is required.
Windows XP/2003 (x64): WinPcap 3.2 alpha1 or newer is required. Capture from dialup/VPN adapters is not supported on 64 bit platforms.
Vista/Longhorn (x86): WinPcap 3.1 should work, but with limited functionality. PPP is not supported, and IPv6 addresses are not listed. We strongly suggest upgrading to WinPcap 4.0 or newer for better support on Windows Vista. Please refer to FAQ Q-28 for more details on Vista support.
Vista/Longhorn (x64): WinPcap 4.0 or newer is required."

Hi All,
Ya, true DICOM Sniffer is not compatible to WinPcap 4.x.
I'll correct the user guide and messages popped up for WinPCap installer. It should be WinPCap 3.x.
Also i'm in discussion to make DICOM Sniffer work with WinPCap 4.x. I'll update you all as soon as sniffer will compatible with winpcap 4.x.

Regards,
Piyush
