DICOM Network Analyzer terminates unexpectedly while Capturing [by scosby]

DICOM Network Analyzer:: DICOM Network Analyzer terminates unexpectedly while Capturing
The DICOM Network Analyzer terminates after just a few minutes. This seems to happen only while capturing. I'm running the Analyzer on my DICOM server while logged in remotely (Windows Remote Desktop) from my office PC.
If I work on my PC for a while, when I switch focus back to my Windows Remote Desktop connection, the DICOM Network Analyzer is there initially but disappears immediately. Sometimes I think I see another window on top that perhaps contains some message, but I don't have enough time to make out what it really is.

LS,

thanks for sharing your findings with us.

I have asked a colleage to figure out what causes this problem (wrong definition file(s) or wrong interpretation of the definition files).

When I have more information on this problem and the updates needed for 2012, I will let you know.

Regards,
Marco

DICOM Network Analyzer:: DVTK Analyzer
Hi John,

the main goals of the DVTk DICOM Network analyzer are to offer a single application to both capture the DICOM communication taking place and view/validate the DICOM communication taking place.

This application deals with DICOM from a technical point of view: it will validate the communication taking place against what is specified in the DICOM standard. And if DICOM specified that an error status may be returned in the C-STORE-RSP, and this error status will be sent, this is considered DICOM valid and it will be considered passed (assuming no other DICOM violation takes place).

Hope this makes things more clear.

Marco

DICOM Network Analyzer:: Installation of Network Analyzer not working
I had something somewhat similar: "DICOM Network Analyzer 3.3.2.msi" stopped install saying WinPCap(4.2.1) was already installed, so Network Analyzer was aborting the install. (it should have been able to simply skip that step and continue.)
Looks like I'll have to de-install winPcap, then re-attempt install of Network Analyzer.

WIRESHARK also installs WinPCap v4.2.1 by default, but a "/S" command line switch can be used to load "default" install without winpcap. - see wireshark v1.4.6 user guide section 2.8.1.4). (I think the default load of wireshark would also detect that winpcap was already installed, and either deinstall an older version and then install the newer winpcap, or skip that step if winpcap were the same version.)
It may be wise to reboot after winpcap deinstall, prior to reinstall attempt.
Note:
- other apps may also use WinPcap, and it could easily be installed directly/independently.
- In the past (on older versions of DVT) there have been issues with older/newer versions of winpcap being incompatible with it.
- The installer needs to include an option allowing the WinPcap install to be skipped if necessary, or to upgrade an older winpcap version if needed. A reboot is probably advisable after winpcap deinstall, prior to reinstall.

We released a new version today which solves a number of the issues. It is an alpha version, but you could give it a try.

From the DVTk team: help needed with missing packages problem [by marcokemper]

DICOM Network Analyzer:: From the DVTk team: help needed with missing packages problem

LS,

since we released the new DICOM Network Analyzer 3.2.6, we have had multiple positive comments from users that they thought this new version was much more stable than the previous versions. We are of course very happy with these kind of comments.

On some specific systems however, people have reported the loss of packages when capturing with the DICOM Network Analyzer. This results in an incomplete byte stream resulting in displaying incomplete information about DICOM associations taking place. The same problem (incomplete byte stream) has also has been reported when people used WireShark on these systems. Most systems do not have this problem, so it appears to be a system configuration problem. The thing that the DICOM Network Analyzer and Wireshark have in common is the WinPCap library used.

The following two forum topics have been found in the WinPCap forum by one of our team members:
Q-21: My application doesn't see any traffic being sent by the machine running WinPcap.
A: If you are running some form of VPN client software, it might be causing this problem; people have
seen this problem when they have Check Point's VPN software installed on their machine. If that's the cause of the problem,
you will have to remove the VPN software in order to make the application see outgoing packets.

Q-10: Does WinPcap work in connection with personal firewalls?
A: We got several reports saying that WinPcap does not work well if a personal firewall is installed on the same machine as WinPcap.
The typical problem is the impossibility to capture all or part of the traffic from an adapter, but some users reported strange behaviors (like some packets disappearing) on the transmit side too.
Most of the times, the problem is caused by non-standard interactions between the firewall and the network stack of the OS, so there not a lot to do on our side; the suggested remedy consists in uninstalling the firewall.
Note: uninstalling, and not disabling, because some firewalls (like ZoneAlarm) keep having strange behaviors even when they are disabled.

We would like to know if you have experienced simular problem with the 3.2.6 version. And we are very interested if someone has found a solution for this problem.

Regards,

Marco

DICOM Network Analyzer:: Some question about the contents of manual for Network Analyzer
This looks like an incorrect validation error. I believe that this was already reported recently in a ticket to us. When the ticket is fixed, we will also update the user manual to work correctly.

Floris.

DICOM Network Analyzer:: Support for Windows 2008 Sever and Network analyzer 3.2.3 ?
We haven't tested officially the support of Windows Server 2008 for the DICOM Network Analyzer. We still need to solve a minor issue for support for Windows Vista. Since Server 2008 and Vista are based on the same architecture I expect the DICOM Network Analyzer also to work on Server 2008.
